GTA 6: Is It Single-Player Only? Online, Story Length and More

Yes. GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026 as a single-player game: Rockstar calls it "a single player experience", and the PlayStation Store lists it as 1 player with offline play enabled. Rockstar has not announced a new GTA Online, and one developer's playthrough of the story took about 80 hours.

Here is everything confirmed about how GTA 6 plays at launch, and what is still only talk.

What Rockstar has said

Rockstar's pre-order announcement in June described GTA 6 as a single-player experience coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The store listings back that up:

• The PlayStation Store lists 1 player and offline play enabled.
• Both store listings repeat that the game "is a single-player experience".
• The ESRB rating lists only one interactive element, In-Game Purchases. There is no "Users Interact" note, the label the ESRB adds when players can talk to each other, which fits a single-player launch.

You will still need an internet connection to download the game and any updates, and some online features need a PlayStation or Rockstar account.

What about GTA Online?

Rockstar has not announced a GTA Online for GTA 6, or any multiplayer mode, and has not said when one might come.

The only public hint came from outside Rockstar. In a September interview with Bloomberg, Twitch CEO Dan Clancy said Twitch expects a big jump in viewing when GTA 6 launches, and "an even bigger one next year when they launch multiplayer". Polygon, TweakTown and IGN all reported the comment, and all noted Rockstar has not confirmed it. Treat 2027 as a report, not a date.

GTA Online for GTA 5 is still running, with an October Halloween event posted on Rockstar's Newswire.

How long is GTA 6's story?

Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson told The New York Times his playthrough in February took about 80 hours. He said that included the main story and some optional goals that affect the narrative, as reported by IGN and Polygon.

For context, IGN puts GTA 4 and GTA 5 at around 30 hours each for the story and Red Dead Redemption 2 at 50 to 60 hours. Nelson knows the game inside out, so a first-time player who explores will likely take longer.

Two protagonists, one story

You play as Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. Rockstar's bios describe Jason as a former soldier working for drug runners in the Keys, and Lucia as fresh out of the Leonida Penitentiary, chasing the good life her mother dreamed of in Liberty City.

From the previews:

• You can switch between them at almost any time, and they often work missions together.
• Their relationship is up to you. Rob Nelson told IGN you can play them as a couple or keep it platonic, and GTABase's summary of Game Informer's preview says neither path gives a gameplay advantage, though the relationship can shape parts of the story.
• Choices matter. Rockstar told Game Informer that big and small decisions change how the story plays out, to encourage more than one playthrough.

No microtransactions in the story

Rockstar told Kinda Funny during the August preview that there are "no monetizations in this game", as reported by IGN. The only paid extra announced is the Ultimate Edition Upgrade, which adds vehicles, weapons, shops and two extra activities.

• Any GTA Online for GTA 6, and its timing.
• Whether single-player content will be added after launch.
• Whether there are multiple endings. Rockstar has only said choices affect the story.
