GTA 6 is rated M (Mature 17+) by the ESRB and PEGI 18 in Europe. What the ratings list, what PEGI's removed page said, and the in-game purchases label.
GTA 6 is rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB in North America and PEGI 18 in Europe and the UK. Both ratings flag strong violence, drug use, sexual content and nudity, and both note in-game purchases.
None of that is a surprise for Grand Theft Auto. What made news this week is how much detail Europe's PEGI board gave before its page came down. Here is what each rating says and what it means for players and parents.
The ratings at a glance
| Region | Rating | Content listed | Source status |
|---|---|---|---|
| US and Canada (ESRB) | M, Mature 17+ | Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol. Also In-Game Purchases | Confirmed on esrb.org |
| Europe and UK (PEGI) | 18 | Drugs, Sexual Content, Extreme Violence, Nudity, In-Game Purchases | Confirmed on the UK PlayStation Store listing |
| Australia | R18+ | High impact violence, drug use and sex scenes | Reported; we could not open the Classification Board database to check |
The ESRB listing covers PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series only, which matches Rockstar's announced platforms.
What the ESRB rating says
The ESRB entry is short so far. It lists the seven content descriptors above and one interactive element, In-Game Purchases. IGN noted on October 1 that the ESRB's longer rating summary, the paragraph that usually describes specific scenes, had not been posted yet. When it appears, it may add detail about specific scenes and systems.
By October 1, Rockstar had added the rating to the game's store pages, and its Newswire posts now carry the same descriptors.
What PEGI's removed listing said
PEGI published its 18 rating on Friday, October 2, according to Radio Times, and then took the detailed page down. PC Gamer and Radio Times both reported its wording before it disappeared. We could not find an explanation from PEGI for the removal. The main points, in plain terms:
- Violence is described as bloody and highly realistic, and some weapons can cause dismemberment. That goes further than earlier GTA games, where injuries were mostly blood effects.
- Animals, including pets, can be harmed, though PEGI said this does not show the same injury detail as attacks on people.
- Drug use is frequent. PEGI said players can carry drugs and use them from their inventory at any time.
- Sexual content and nudity are present, including scenes in nightclubs. PEGI rated these strongly enough to require an adult rating on their own.
Fans have read these lines as hints about gameplay systems, such as a usable inventory of consumables. Rockstar has not commented.
"In-game purchases" vs "no monetizations"
Both ratings mention in-game purchases, which confused some players. In August, Rockstar told Kinda Funny there are "no monetizations in this game", as reported by IGN.
The likely explanation: the only paid extra Rockstar has announced is the Ultimate Edition Upgrade, which Standard Edition owners can buy inside the PlayStation and Microsoft stores at any time. Rating boards flag any paid add-on. The PlayStation Store also labels purchases as "optional". IGN reads the label the same way. Rockstar has not announced any in-game currency for the single-player game.
What this means for parents
- ESRB M (17+) means the content is generally suitable for ages 17 and up. In the US the rating is guidance, and retailers set their own ID policies.
- PEGI 18 means adults only, and in the UK the rating is enforced at retail.
- Console parental controls on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S can block games above a chosen age rating, set spending limits and restrict purchases.
If you are deciding for a teenager, the PEGI notes above are the most detailed public description of the content so far.
What this means for players
Very little changes: Grand Theft Auto has carried adult ratings for decades. The useful part is the hints. Ratings boards see the content before the public does, so their wording can reveal systems Rockstar has not talked about, such as the drug inventory PEGI described.
